The attached PowerPoint was used to start the conversation, and the following observations were made:
- Too much assessment
- this can demoralise students
- it can take too much lesson time
- more open-book assessments can be productive, especially early in the course
- get students to make 1 A4 sheet of notes that they are allowed to bring into the test
- Edexcel Emporium has useful baseline assessments
- weaker students can be supported in y13 with a focus on AS rather than the full A level - this can improve confidence sufficiently that they end up being ready to tackle the full A level in the end.
- What should we expect of new y13 students?
- In addition to the suggestions on the PowerPoint, we thought there would be good developmental questions on tangents and normals in the resource areas for Desmos and Geogebra
- Desmos marble slides
However, with the range of optional content and variety of structure for Further Maths, it is a little more difficult to change, and in any case there is a lot more to consider than just the exam papers.
